Welcome to the Bournemouth Oratory website, where you will find up-to-date news and information about both the Congregation of the Oratory and the Sacred Heart Parish.
When Bishop Philip Egan invited the Oratory to form a new community here in the seaside town of Bournemouth, he did so because he wanted, for the people of Bournemouth, what the Oratory has to offer, namely, a stable community of priests and brothers serving a particular church, in a particular way. Oratorians do not generally move from place to place, and so, in time, we get to know our people and they get to know us. In an established Oratory, one father may have married and baptised several generations of one family or served someone as their Confessor for most of their life.
In a sense, there is nothing special about the priests of the Oratory. They go about their work as do any other priests, preaching the Word of God, teaching their people habits of prayer, and ensuring that the Sacraments are freely available to them. These things they try to do in the joyful and humble spirit of St Philip Neri, the founder of the Congregation of the Oratory.
That is our intention: to build up the Congregation of the Oratory of St Philip here in Bournemouth, and to do what he intended the Oratory to do: ‘to make people saints in their own homes’.
