On the day that we celebrated liturgically the feast of the Epiphany, when the wise men brought their gifts to the baby Jesus, the Fathers and Brothers of the Oratory hosted a thank-you party for those who, throughout the year, bring their gifts to Jesus through service at the Oratory.
Fr Peter, the parish priest, said: “The Oratory at the Sacred Heart church could not function as it does without the many people who generously give their time and talents to the Church and the community.
“Many people contribute in a more obvious way, such as singing in the choir, bell-ringing or serving at the altar, making an important contribution to the dignity of our liturgical celebrations. Others perform vital roles behind the scenes, for example helping with finance and administration, counting the collection, running our Catholic Church Shop, catering for events, keeping the church beautiful through cleaning and flower provision, preparing vestments or linens for the sanctuary, and being available to help with ‘handyman’ jobs.
“Moreover there are those involved with parish apostolates like the SVP who serve those in need. These and many others are the “unsung heroes” of the parish, and the Fathers and Brothers of the Oratory express our deep appreciation for their many contributions.”
The parish party began with the regular Sunday evening Benediction at 6pm. It was observed afterwards how it was enhanced by the presence of the choir, which sang a couple of additional motets.
Fr Peter concluded: “Some people hold back from getting involved thinking that there are sufficient people doing the necessary tasks. In reality, we very much need more volunteers for nearly everything. As we recall the gifts brought by the wise men this Epiphany, we invite all members of the parish to bring their gifts to Jesus through their involvement with the Church and the parish community.”
